Toshiba usually ship their Toshiba Portege Laptop computers with Recovery CDs or Recovery DVDs (also known as Portege hard drive Recovery CDs, Portege hard drive Restore CDs, Portege hard drive data Restore CDs, Portege hard drive Recovery DVDs, Portege hard drive Restore DVDs or Portege hard drive data Restore DVDs ). The Toshiba Portege Recovery CDs & Toshiba Portege Recovery DVDs are specifically designed for your Toshiba Portege Laptop computer & usually contain an image of what was on the computers hard drive when it was first bought. They allow you to return the machine to its original state (as new). This is particularly useful if the Portege has been attacked by a virus, if the original Toshiba Portege hard drive has developed a fault, or if you simply wish to replace or upgrade the Toshiba Portege hard drive, & need to re-install your original software.

If your Toshiba Portege has been attacked by a virus, or worse still; is infected with a virus which you cannot remove, the best course of action is often to re-install from your Toshiba Portege Recovery CDs or  Toshiba Portege Recovery DVD & then install quality anti virus & anti spyware programs .

If your Toshiba Portege computer has a faulty hard disk drive (eg; if the hard drive cannot be "seen" by the computer, if it has bad sectors, bad blocks or is making a clicking or loud whirling noise), the best course of action is usually to completely replace the Toshiba Portege hard drive & restore & the original software from your Toshiba Portege hard drive data Recovery CD or Toshiba Portege Recovery DVD. This process will usually involve replacing the hard drive & then placing the Toshiba Portege Recovery CDs or Toshiba Portege Recovery DVD in the CD ROM or DVD ROM drive & re-booting the system. The Portege should then boot from the Toshiba Portege Recovery CDs or Toshiba Portege Recovery DVD (on some systems, you may need to tap the "c" key whilst the Portege is restarting) & this will then reinstall (please note that you will need your product key; this can be found on the laptop base).

If your original Toshiba Portege installation CDs / Toshiba Portege hard drive data Recovery CDs are damaged (scratched, cracked etc), they should not be used as this can cause problems installing Windows, or may appear to install successfully but you will experience difficulties at a later date. The Toshiba Portege Recovery CDs or Toshiba Portege Recovery DVD will need to be replaced.

All Toshiba Portege laptop computers need to use small programs called Toshiba Portege drivers. Toshiba Portege drivers simply tell the laptop about items which are built into it (such as a Toshiba Portege sound card driver; for producing sound, Toshiba Portege video card driver for producing graphics etc), or attached to it (such as a scanner or printer). One of the advantages of owning a Toshiba Portege laptop is that the Toshiba Portege hard drive data Recovery CD will usually contain Toshiba Portege drivers for all of the items which are built into it, & these are needed for the Toshiba Portege laptop to work correctly.
